Poonkar Rice (frequently spelled Poongar) is a highly revered traditional, indigenous red rice variety native to Tamil Nadu, India. Culturally crowned as "Women’s Rice," this hand-pounded, unpolished heirloom grain has been recommended by traditional healers across generations to support female physiological health from puberty through menopause.

The grain features a distinct pale reddish-brown hue due to its high concentration of anthocyanin antioxidants and carries a pleasingly mild, nutty flavor. Agronomically, it is celebrated by farmers for its extreme resilience, being highly flood-tolerant and requiring minimal water to thrive.

USAGE/RECIPE

Poonkar rice possesses a coarse, unpolished bran that demands a bit of patience to cook into a soft, digestible texture.

💡 Preparation Tips

  • Soaking: To break down phytic inhibitors and cut down cooking time, rinse the rice gently and soak it in water for 2 to 4 hours before cooking.
  • Water Ratio: Use a 1:3 ratio (1 cup of soaked rice to 3 cups of water).

Culinary Applications

  • Traditional Kanji (Porridge): The most common therapeutic application. Simmer the rice with excess water, garlic, cumin, and a splash of buttermilk for a highly digestible breakfast.
  • Breakfast Tiffin Batters: Due to its excellent fermentation properties, it is an absolute favorite for creating crispy Dosas, soft Idlis, Puttu, and Idiyappam.
  • As a Staple Alternative: Serve it soft-cooked alongside traditional rich gravies, sambar, or spiced vegetable stir-fries.

(Note: Because of its slightly dense and chewy properties, it is typically preferred for breakfast gruels, porridge, or tiffin batters rather than a loose, fluffy afternoon lunch rice).
