Red Sorghum Flakes, structurally akin to standard flattened rice (Poha) or cornflakes, are made by cleanly parboiling, flattening, and drying whole Red Sorghum grains—widely known as Red Jowar in Hindi, Chivappu Cholam in Tamil, and Chuvanna Cholam Aval in Malayalam.

The flakes are easily distinguished by their rustic, reddish-brown hue, which comes from the grain's natural pigment layers. They carry a wonderfully nutty, earthy, and bold flavor profile. Unlike white sorghum, the red variant is highly unique because its outer bran layer holds a significantly heavier concentration of protective plant compounds and specific antioxidants.

USAGE/RECIPE

Because the grains have already been parboiled and flattened into flakes during manufacturing, they do not require any tedious or prolonged cooking. They soak up moisture incredibly fast.

💡 Preparation Tip

  • The Quick Rinse: Place the flakes in a colander or fine sieve. Rinse them gently under cool running water for 15 to 30 seconds to moisten them uniformly. Let them sit damp for 5 minutes; they will absorb the moisture and become perfectly soft and fluffy without turning mushy.

Popular Culinary Applications

  • Red Sorghum Poha / Upma: This is the most common savory preparation. Heat a splash of oil or ghee in a pan, temper it with mustard seeds, green chilies, onions, turmeric, and curry leaves. Add your rinsed, softened Red Sorghum flakes, toss gently on low heat for 3–4 minutes, and finish with a squeeze of fresh lemon and a sprinkle of grated coconut. Organic Positive
  • The No-Cook Buttermilk Porridge: Ideal for hot weather or a light, gut-soothing meal. Gently crush a handful of dry or lightly rinsed flakes directly into a bowl of cool, lightly salted buttermilk seasoned with crushed ginger, green chilies, and curry leaves. Let it sit for 5 minutes to soften before enjoying. Organic Positive
  • Healthy Sweet Snack Mix (Sweet Aval): Toss your softened flakes gently with fresh grated coconut, a pinch of green cardamom powder, and raw jaggery syrup or coconut sugar. It serves as a spectacular, iron-rich evening snack for children. Organic Positive
  • Nutritious Cereal Bowl: Use them exactly like standard cornflakes. Toast the dry flakes lightly in an air-fryer or pan for 2 minutes to optimize crispiness, pour them into a bowl, and top with warm or cold milk, nuts, and a light drizzle of honey.
